A Shishya of Padmashri Guru Srimati Chitra Viswsewaran of Chennai, she considers herself a devotee in the pursuit of that higher knowledge which is our Indian philosophy and classicism.
Her grasp of this dance form has been strengthened through the guidance of Srimati Thankamani Kutty, Sri Kalamandalam Venkitt & Srimati Anasuya Banerjee, since early childhood.
Trained under some of the doyens of the art form, she went onto winning the State Academy & then the National Scholarship Awards from Govt. of India and thus began her journey or as she prefers to call it her “sadhana” – a pursuit of the richness of this dance form.
With the encouragement of her husband & mother, she started her own Institution, “Prabaha Kalabhoomi” to train young aspirants the nuances of our heritage & culture with enriched discipline, creativity & vision in the traditional custom of Guru-Shishya Parampara.
She has been awarded with the Natyashri & Kala Kanmani awards among several others, for her commendable contributions in the field of Bharatnatyam through her solo & group productions as well as for the remarkable achievements of her disciples all across the country. Debjani considers her art form as a reflection of the melody of the soul & body and artistes as healers who can help the World rid of many ills, soothe minds & bring smiles.
